    Born: December 4, 1957 in St. Paul.
    High School: Graduated from St. Paul Cretin, 1975.
    College: Graduated from College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, 1979.

    Sweeney began his broadcasting career in St. Paul in 1974. He moved to North Dakota in 1980 and, after brief stops at television stations in Williston and Dickinson, joined WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks in 1982. He was WDAZ sports director from 1983 to 2014. He is a three-time state sportscaster of the year award winner (1985, 1989, 2005). He helped WDAZ win an Edward R. Murrow Award for its coverage of the 1997 Red River flood. After graduating from college, Sweeney worked briefly as a cartoonist at a weekly newspaper.
